I obtained my undergraduate education at The University of Texas in Austin, TX, where I majored in Biology and minored in Biochemistry. I attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, and completed my Emergency Medicine Residency at Wake Forest University/North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC.
After completing my residency, I stayed on at Wake Forest University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, where I also held the position of Residency Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program.
During my academic affiliation at Wake Forest University, I developed an interest in Ultrasound and it’s applications in Emergency Medicine. I was a member of, and eventually the Chairman of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Interest Group. It is through this interest that I first began using ultrasound guidance for intravenous line placement, a skill which is fundamental to the practice of Phlebology.
Also during my academic career, I was asked to write a chapter on Soft Tissue Infections for Dr. Tintinalli’s Emergency Medicine – a Comprehensive Study Guide, one of the primary textbooks in Emergency Medicine. Through my research in writing that chapter, and revisions in two subsequent editions of the textbook, I developed a lasting interest in wound care and am happy to be bringing that interest and knowledge to the field of vein care, and to patients with chronic venous ulcers.
After leaving academic medicine, I became a partner in Mid-Atlantic Emergency Medical Associates where I have been affiliated with all three Novant Health Medical Centers in the Charlotte area, including the Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center (formerly Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville).
I spent ten years on the medical staff at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville, NC, eight of those years as the Medical Director of the Emergency Department, and thirteen years on the medical staff at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville, NC. As a resident of Mooresville, I am excited and happy to be continuing to care for the people of our community.
